Afghanistan: Biden says another Kabul airport attack likely

Image
Another attack on Kabul airport is highly likely, US President Joe Biden has warned, saying commanders have told him it could come as early as Sunday. The US is continuing evacuations but the final UK troops, diplomats and officials have now left Kabul. A suicide bombing near the airport on Thursday resulted in some 170 deaths. A local branch of the Islamic State group - Islamic State in Khorasan Province (IS-K) - claimed the attack. In retaliation, the US carried out a drone strike on eastern Afghanistan late on Friday, saying it had killed two "high-profile" IS-K members. The two are described as a planner and a facilitator. It is unclear whether they were directly involved in planning the Kabul airport attack. "This strike was not the last. We will continue to hunt down any person involved in that heinous attack and make them pay," Mr Biden said in a statement released on Saturday. IS-K is the most extreme and violent of all the jihadist militant gro...

Kabul airport attack kills 60 Afghans, 12 U.S. troops; IS claims responsibility

Image
The Islamic State group claimed responsibility for the killings on its Amaq news channel Two suicide bombers and gunmen attacked crowds of Afghans flocking to Kabul's airport on Thursday, transforming a scene of desperation into one of horror in the waning days of an airlift for those fleeing the Taliban takeover. The attacks killed at least 60 Afghans and 12 U.S. troops, Afghan and U.S. officials said. The U.S. general overseeing the evacuation vowed the United States would “go after” the perpetrators of the bombings, and warned that more such attacks are expected. “We are working very hard right now to determine attribution, to determine who is associated with this cowardly attack. And we’re prepared to take action against them,” Gen. Frank McKenzie, head of U.S. Central Command, told Pentagon reporters in a briefing. “Twenty-four-seven. We are looking for them.” Shortly after Gen. McKenzie spoke, the Islamic State group claimed responsibility for the killings...

Beijing Continues To "Coerce, Intimidate" In South China Sea: Kamala Harris

Image
Kamala Harris's seven-day trip to Singapore and Vietnam is aimed at standing up to China's growing security and economic influence globally and addressing concerns about China's claims to disputed parts of the South China Sea. U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris on Tuesday accused Beijing of coercion and intimidation to back unlawful claims in the South China Sea, her most pointed comments on China during a visit to Southeast Asia which she said was critical to U.S. security. Harris's seven-day trip to Singapore and Vietnam, only her second foray internationally, is aimed at standing up to China's growing security and economic influence, addressing concerns about Beijing's claims to disputed parts of the South China Sea and showing Washington can lead the way. In a speech in Singapore, Harris laid out the U.S. vision for the region built on human rights and a rules-based international order and sought to solidify Washington's pivot towards As...

Afghanistan-Taliban Crisis LIVE Updates: Taliban Warn Of "Consequences" If US Extends Evacuation

Image
The Taliban have warned there would be "consequences" if the US and its allies extend their presence in Afghanistan beyond the August 31 deadline, as chaos continued to overwhelm Kabul airport. The Taliban takeover of the country last weekend shocked Western nations, coming just two weeks before the deadline for all troops to fully withdraw from the country. Taliban's statement came a day after US President Joe Biden said he still hopes to complete the "heartbreaking" evacuation from Afghanistan by the end of the month. Meanwhile, Britain said Monday it would urge the US to extend the August 31 deadline for evacuations from Afghanistan. However, the Taliban, who have so far sought to strike a more moderate tone, showed no willingness to compromise on the US pullout. Here are the LIVE Updates on Afghanistan-Taliban crisis: Western countries worked at a "war-footing pace" on Tuesday to get people out of Afghanistan, a NATO country diplom...

"You Stood Still And Silent". How Malala Faced Taliban Bullets

Image
Nine years after she was shot by the Taliban, Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai watched in horror as the terrorist group seized power in Afghanistan. "I watched as province after province fell to men with guns, loaded with bullets like the one that shot me," the 24-year-old said in a post published on Podium, once again emphasising on the need to draw global attention to the plight of civilians in the country.  In 2012, Malala was shot in the head by Taliban terrorists in Pakistan for her campaign for the education of girls. "In October 2012, a member of the Pakistani Taliban boarded my school bus and shot one bullet into my left temple. The bullet grazed my left eye, skull and brain - lacerating my facial nerve, shattering my eardrum and breaking my jaw joints," she recalled in her post. The rights activist described the aftermath of the incident - although her own memories of the day she was shot are non-existent. In her post, she spoke ab...

US, China Accuse Each Other Of "Bullying" Nations

Image
Hanoi: US Vice President Kamala Harris on Wednesday again charged China with bullying its Southeast Asian neighbours, the second time in two days she has attacked Beijing during a regional visit aimed at countering China's growing influence. Earlier on Wednesday, Chinese state media accused Harris of seeking to drive a wedge between China and Southeast Asian nations with comments in Singapore that Beijing used coercion and intimidation to back its unlawful South China Sea claims. Speaking in Hanoi on Wednesday, Harris said there was a need to increase pressure on Beijing over its maritime claims. "We need to find ways to pressure, raise the pressure... on Beijing to abide by the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, and to challenge, its bullying and excessive maritime claims," said Harris during a meeting with Vietnamese President Nguyen Xuan Phuc. China, Vietnam, Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines and Taiwan, lay claim to parts of the South Ch...
